Prof Bahaj meets David Cameron MP,
Leader of the Conservative Party at
the University of Southampton
David Cameron MP, the leader of
the Conservatives, visited the
engineering laboratories of the
University of Southampton's
Sustainable Energy Research Group on
Monday 3rd May 2010. He heard how the
range of disciplines at the
University’s School of Civil
Engineering and the Environment
enabled Southampton to conduct energy
research from many different
perspectives, from monitoring climate
change in the built environment
through to producing renewable energy
solutions.
Professor AbuBakr Bahaj, head of the
Sustainable Energy Research Group,
explained the various areas of
renewable energy research undertaken
by his team and focused particularly
on the potential of marine energy
(tidal and wave), solar photovoltaics,
and energy efficiency in buildings.
'With the right investment, marine
energy could contribute around 10
percent of the UK's electricity
requirements,' commented Prof Bahaj.
Mr Cameron viewed various research and
development projects being conducted
by the group in the marine energy
field, met the Vice Chancellor Prof
Don Nutbeam and various student groups
in the photovoltaic atrium of the
George Thomas Building which was
designed with support from the group.

Dr Patrick James and Dr Neil
Richardson supported artist Neville
Gabie on his iceberg project at the
Tatton Park Biennial which features
an iceberg transported from
Greenland to the UK. SERG helped
with the development and
installation of the cooling
mechanism used for keeping the
iceberg frozen. Electricity is
generated via a photovoltaic array
which drives a propane chilling unit
using pond water as heat exchanger.

Prof AbuBakr Bahaj, from the
University of Southampton’s School
of Civil Engineering and the
Environment (SCEE) was the lead
academic on the Institutions of
Civil Engineers (ICE) report
Offshore Renewables: Unlocking the
Potential launched at the ICE on 18
March 2010.
The report responds to the UK
electricity sector’s security of
supply crisis, as one third (30GW)
of UK’s power plants are due to
close by 2025 coupled with the need
to urgently decarbonise our energy
supply to meet pressing
environmental targets.
ICE’s report says the rapid
up-scaling of offshore renewable
resources, on a similar scale to
that experienced by the North Sea
oil and gas sector in the 60’s and
70’s, could provide the solution.
Professor Bahaj who heads the Energy
and Climate Division within SCEE,
looks beyond wind, surveying the
progress in the infant tidal and
wave energy sectors. He notes that
“the UK possesses some of the
richest wave, tidal and wind
resources in the world, with the
potential to provide a large
proportion of the UK’s current
electricity demand as well as create
a major new industrial sector, with
significant export potential. The
tidal resource around the UK waters
contain a potential for 0.25 TW of
power, which if one tenth was
exploited, would equate to around
half of the nation’s current
electricity consumption.
